Running a restaurant means making hundreds of small decisions every day. Your restaurant POS system should remove work from that list—not create more of it.
That is the idea behind Avocado’s latest product updates. In August, we shipped seven improvements designed to help restaurant owners manage taxes, access their money, reconcile sales, control devices, and give guests a smoother ordering experience.
Current Avocado restaurants can start using these improvements as they become available in their accounts. If you are comparing restaurant point-of-sale systems, these updates show what an owner-focused POS platform can do beyond simply taking payments.
1. Manage multiple tax rates from your restaurant POS
Restaurant tax rules are rarely one-size-fits-all. Depending on your location and menu, prepared food, packaged goods, alcohol, merchandise, and other items may need different tax treatment.
Avocado now supports multiple named tax rates. Restaurant owners and managers can create and edit tax rates, assign the right rate to an item, and calculate orders containing items with different rates.
For current customers, this means more control over menu setup and fewer manual workarounds at checkout. For growing restaurant groups, food trucks, cafés, and specialty retailers, it creates a more flexible foundation as the menu or business model changes.
2. Control restaurant devices and cash drawers in one place
As a restaurant adds iPads, registers, kiosks, and service stations, device management can quickly become confusing. It should be easy to know which device is which and how each one is configured.
The Avocado dashboard now gives restaurant owners a centralized view of their devices. You can view and rename devices, inspect device-level settings, and manage supported behavior without tracking down every iPad individually.
We also added per-device cash drawer support. Restaurants can assign a dedicated cash drawer to each iPad, making it easier to organize multiple registers and understand activity by station.
These controls are especially useful for restaurants with multiple checkout areas, busy counter-service operations, and mobile setups that need clear device ownership.
3. Request restaurant payouts from the dashboard
Cash flow matters in every restaurant. Owners need a clear way to understand when funds are available and move eligible money when the business needs it.
Avocado restaurant owners can now initiate eligible payouts directly from the dashboard and follow their status while they are processing. Available amounts are based on the eligible net balance, helping present a clearer picture of what can actually be paid out.
Additional safeguards coordinate payouts for shared Stripe accounts, reducing the risk of overlapping requests. The result is a faster, more transparent payout workflow without switching between disconnected systems.
4. Apply automatic cash rounding at checkout
Cash rounding is increasingly important for restaurants operating without pennies or following local rounding practices. Doing that math manually slows checkout and creates opportunities for reporting differences.
Avocado now lets restaurants configure cash-rounding rules that the POS applies automatically to eligible cash transactions. The adjustment is carried through to restaurant reporting so the register and sales totals remain aligned.
Cashiers get a faster checkout flow, managers get more consistent records, and guests receive a total that follows the restaurant’s configured policy.
5. Print restaurant Z reports and clearer refund receipts
End-of-day restaurant reporting should make reconciliation easier. Avocado now supports printable business-day Z reports with the sales and refund information operators need to close out a shift or accounting period.
We also improved reprinted receipts. Refund details appear more clearly, while canceled payment attempts are excluded from the receipt. This gives employees, owners, and guests a more accurate record of what happened on an order.
Together, these improvements reduce ambiguity during closeout and make it easier to investigate differences without piecing together information from several screens.
6. Improve online ordering with delivery estimates and menu-specific links
A good restaurant online ordering system should set clear expectations before a guest pays. Avocado storefronts now show delivery estimates during checkout and calculate available opening times with preparation time in mind.
Restaurants can also share menu-specific ordering links. Each link can open the appropriate menu and keep the customer’s cart scoped to that menu, creating a cleaner path for businesses with multiple menus, locations, concepts, or service periods.
These changes help guests choose the right menu, understand when an order may arrive, and select a realistic time—without calling the restaurant for clarification.
7. Accept gift cards at self-service kiosks
Guests expect gift cards to work wherever they order. Avocado kiosks now support gift card redemption during checkout, extending the same payment flexibility to self-service ordering.
Customers can redeem a restaurant gift card without leaving the kiosk flow or asking an employee to move the order to another register. That means a more consistent guest experience and fewer interruptions for front-of-house staff during busy periods.
More reliable payments and day-to-day operations
Alongside these seven features, we shipped a series of fixes across Avocado’s restaurant POS, online ordering, dashboard, and kitchen systems.
Fees remain attached to an order after declined or abandoned payment attempts.
Tipped invoice totals display more accurately.
Anonymous payment-link customers stay on the correct payment page.
Zero-dollar orders settle correctly in the POS.
Available ordering times account for restaurant preparation time.
Delivery labels and card-reader instructions are clearer for employees.
Improved connectivity handling helps the KDS and POS respond more reliably when network conditions change.
A restaurant POS built around how owners operate
The best restaurant POS software connects payments, online ordering, kitchen operations, reporting, and day-to-day management. These updates are part of Avocado’s ongoing work to make that entire system simpler for restaurant owners and their teams.
